Banana Mode: The Ultimate Evolution of Leadership
The internet is awash with memes of “Founder Mode” which is this idea posited by Paul Graham and masterfully explained by in a recent article that can be found right here on Medium.
After carefully explaining Founder Mode, Joe goes on to propose a new management paradigm that really got me thinking. He coined the term, “Banana Mode,” as the next big thing in management styles.
Let’s be real: It’s not only the next big thing. It’s the ONLY thing; the ultimate evolution of leadership in any startup, unicorn, institutional business that has been around for decades, or government.
Banana Mode is the perfect blending of Founder Mode, Manager Mode, Dictator Mode, Owner Mode, and every other mode you’ve ever heard of or never heard of or invented in the shower. It’s a leadership style taken to a whole new level where you’re not just building the plane while flying it — you’re designing a better plane mid-flight, planting banana trees in-flight for future sustainability (and saving bananas from extinction), and convincing the passengers they’re already airborne innovators.
Banana Mode was birthed out of deference for Paul Graham’s immortal observation: “Founder mode is a way of running a company — the way a founder would run it — as distinct from manager mode, the way it would be run by ‘merely a professional manager.’” This quote, often whispered in the corridors of startups and tech giants alike, holds disproportionate importance in Banana Mode yet holds no value at all. It signifies that leadership is not about ‘just managing’ but about embodying the essence of everything — from the visionary to the inventor, from the improvisor to the driver.
In Banana Mode:
- Innovation happens on instinct. Decisions are guided by gut and by data. No prototype? No problem. We’ll prototype the prototype.
- Roles blend into a yellow, delicious smoothie of versatility. You’re the founder, the manager, the builder, the driver — all at once. Every meeting might be a pitch, a plan, a pep talk, a TED talk, or all four.
- Setbacks are just curveballs in the Banana World Series. Flexibility reigns supreme, making it impossible to break, only bend — like a banana, but unbreakable.
The Banana Mode isn’t just a way of running a company; it’s the mindset of those who refuse to choose between driving a vision and executing it. It’s for leaders who know that every great leap forwarded is achieved by first slipping on a banana peel — and laughing their way to success!
